Sure, there are always a lot of questions about staying in Egypt. Some of them are displayed in a social media group every day. Please let us write a short list of frequently asked questions. If you cannot find your question or concern, you can always ask for advice
If you are traveling to Egypt, let us reply your questions:
It all starts with the airport transfer. There is no public transport at Egyptian
airports
(except Cairo). In Hurghada you only take a
taxi.
Of course you can use the service of your tour operator. Private transfer can be booked from 10-15 euro / vehicle.
Renting a car in Egypt is not impossible, but be sure that you can deal with the different driving styles here. The prices for rental cars are reasonable (you can ask more here). You can drive with your international driver's license.
After landing and picking up your
luggage, make sure you haven't lost anything and that there was no damage to it during the transfer. If you only leave the arrival hall for “one cigarette” and then plan to return to solve the problem, you may not. Once you leave the arrival hall, you cannot go back.
If you are leaving and the bus picks you up from the hotel, make sure that the concierge has brought your luggage and the suitcase goes on the bus with you. Check-out times can be tough and you really don't need to experience the suitcase staying in the hotel and while you are heading to the airport.
When requesting a service, always agree on the price for it in advance. Good advice: make it clear whether you are paying in euros, dollars or Egyptian pounds. Don't expect you will agree and finalize the price in the end!
Using a local SIM card
is very useful when ordering a service. It is always wiser to use the local SIM card than to pay a lot of money for roaming.
You usually need to take your original SIM card out of the phone in order for the new one, the Egyptian one, to work. Even if you close mobile data in your German / English card, the new card can be inferred and not work. The mobile shops here are responding very quickly to all mobile needs.
In addition to the local SIM card with data, many tourists are curious also about cigarettes
and their prices. If you are wondering whether it is necessary to bring the cigarettes here, we will tell you - there are many options here and you can find good prices. You can shop in Duty Free 48 hours after arrival. Local cigarettes are available in all supermarkets at reasonable prices (compared to your country).
Shopping
is a very special part of your vacation. If you think you can get the real original piece
of anything (as ex. crocodile leather), you're wrong. If you were too, you couldn't fly away with it! The Red Sea products are a special category. The Red Sea is protected by law and it is not wise to remove the country's natural beauties (shells and corals).
In addition to the souvenir shops, you will find a pharmacy
on every corner. If you use some medication
regularly, make sure you bring enough to take care of your vacation. Most (or equivalent) drugs are available in Egyptian pharmacies. However, you don't need to have the headache to look for them. For drugs that are not approved in Egypt, or only to a very limited extent, make sure that you carry your doctor's prescription.
While walking and shopping, you will surely feel the famous Egyptian hot weather. You know you're flying into the African desert. Of course, you will be exposed to the heat in summer. If you want to spend a relaxing holiday, plan your visit from October to April. Your companion should be sun protection, headgear and a bottle of water.
It is common knowledge that drinking water
should only be supplied in bottles. Most hotels offer this in an all-inclusive system. On the other hand, you are not at risk if you brush your teeth or wash your hair under running water.
When your
departure day
comes, you want to check your return flight. Most airlines sell your plane ticket with information. Please confirm your flight 24 hours in advance to be informed about any changes. If you are traveling with a travel agency charter, you will be informed about the return flight by your guide and on hotel information boards. For an individual booking, contact the airlines.
Hopefully it never happens to you, but if you should have lost your passport or ID card, you must visit your embassy in Cairo. You will need to get a new travel document and get the stamp from the visa office which will supply lost entry visa (your visa is stamped with date of arrival and date of departure).
If you want to avoid problems with the loss of your phone
and personal data, keep "Find my phone" in your laptop app. Let the internet active on the phone and set the phone to "Localize".
To be ready for your day of departure, see our article about it. If you stay in Egypt for more than 84 days, you not only have to renew your tourist visa, you also cannot leave by charter flight. You have to book the regular flight. Most airlines - if you don't have an Egypt-based visa, ask to have a return ticket to Egypt before you fly out.
